This thesis sought to analyze the image of the “Brazilian body” in contemporary Portuguese photography in the attempt to understand which aspects of Brazilian identity, built since the colonial period, are highlighted or surpassed in the production of the image by the Portuguese photographer. The objective of the analysis was: to select a Portuguese photographic production of which the purpose was to produce images of the Brazilian body in the Brazilian territory; to investigate the emergence or construction of stereotypes related to Brazilians over time; to gather theoretical references that also support a postcolonial and feminist perspective; finally, to evaluate if the old representations of the body in the colonial period have similarities with the contemporary production of the photographic image, through a deep examination of images and interviews with the selected photographers themselves. The research presents a theoretical and empirical investigation, conceived from crossing theory, documents, interviews and photographic images. The first chapter posts a theoretical and methodological perspective with the discussion about culture, representation, subjectivity, colonialism in the production of difference and the methodology adopted. The second chapter offered a reflection on the forms of representation of face and body in photography, from a more philosophical approach to a more scientific approach. The third chapter presents some figures and images that represent the colonial ideology, presenting 16th century letters and treatises, landscape photographs, portraits in carte de visite format, 20th century press discourse, and the image of Brazilian women, who are the majority with regard to immigration, as well as protagonists in the representation of Brazil in the press and in the publicity that shows them as bearers of a latent and bewitching sexuality. The fourth chapter promotes a reading of classic and contemporary authors, both Portuguese and Brazilians, to understand how the image of the Brazilian people was constituted and how some aspects of identity were certainly attributed to "race". The fifth and last chapter analyzed the works and interviews of the seven contemporary Portuguese photographers: Miguel Valle de Figueiredo, André Cepeda, Valter Vinagre, Duarte Belo, Jordi Burch, Martim Ramos and Catarina Botelho. Based on these works, this thesis approaches aspects of culture, identity, representation and subjectivity to understand how photography can also be seen as a tool to overcome preconceived images based on a subjectivity that is assured by the understanding of photography as the result of an encounter between an ethical subject and a subject that evokes ethics.
