Vista fora de contexto, a atividade de Marcos Portugal no Brasil, entre 1811 e 1830, parece algo antiquada. Contudo é precisamente o seu contexto que determinou prioridades que pertenciam, de facto, a outro mundo noutro tempo. Em 1815, quando foi promulgada a elevação do Brasil a Reino, em pé de igualdade com Portugal e os Algarves(criando assim um Reino Unido constituído por estes três territórios), a corte portuguesa,onde trabalhava o compositor, encontrava-se deslocada não só no espaço (‚exilada‛ da Europa), mas, para todos os devidos efeitos, também no tempo, vivendo e reforçando constantemente uma existência absolutista pré-Revolução Francesa numa época pós napoleónica. Este texto procura identificar mais exatamente algumas das características desta corte, incluindo alguns aspetos da música no Rio de Janeiro deste tempo, e como a atividade de Marcos Portugal se encaixava dentro deste ambiente. Taken out of context, the activity of Marcos Portugal in Brazil, between 1811and 1830 seems rather behind the times. However, it is precisely his context that determined priorities that do indeed belong to another world in another age. In 1815, when the raising of Brazil to the status of kingdom was announced, placing it on an equal footing with Portugal and the Algarves (in a United Kingdom made up of the three territories), the Portuguese court, where the composer worked, was out of place not only in terms of space (‘exiled’ from Europe), but also, to all intents and purposes, in terms of time, living and constantly reinforcing an absolutist existence belonging to before the French Revolution but in a post-Napoleonic age. This text seeks to identify more exactly some of the characteristics of this court, including certain aspects of the music in Rio de Janeiro at this time, and how the activity of Marcos Portugal fits into this setting.
