The purpose of this investigation is to answer the following question: What is the nature and identity of the Poet? From both Alvaro de Campos’ major odes (a fictitious author created by Fernando Pessoa) as well as the Diapsalmata aphoristic texts (a kierkegaardian fictional work), it is intended to analyze the meaning of a melancholic nature and its relation to the concept of poet. In order to achieve this, it is essential to investigate: a) what constitutes the natural point of view (the non-poetic perspective) and what characterizes the poet´s point of view; b) lucidity and its various degrees, as well as its significance in both the poetic and nonpoetic point of view; c) The fundamental role disposition plays in accessing the world; d) The point of view disclosed in Campos’ poems and in the Diapsalmata; e) melancholy and its relation to the phenomenon named «universalite» by Campos. Therefore, we intend to analyze what it means to have, on one hand, a melancholic nature, which presumes a vision of life anchored in both a passion for the totality of life as well as in the underlying pain implied by that same totality, and, on the other hand, to have a hollow identity, which not only characterizes the perspectives expressed by the above mentioned literary works, but is also the point of view of the poet himself.
