O movimento sufragista português e espanhol só começa a formar-se no início do século XX, quando nos Estados Unidos da América e na Europa ocidental o debate em torno do voto feminino se travava há várias décadas. As razões deste atraso prendem-se sobretudo com a elevada taxa de analfabetismo feminino, a ideia de que a Igreja Católica tinha uma forte influência sobre as mulheres e a entrada tardia das mulheres das classes média e alta no mercado de trabalho. Com esta tese de doutoramento pretendemos analisar o contexto sócio-político em que o debate sobre o voto feminino surgiu na Península Ibérica no inicio dos regimes constitucionais, no século XIX, e aquele que as mulheres portuguesas e espanholas obtiveram o direito de poder participar em eleições legislativas, quer como votantes, quer como candidatas, já na década de 30 do século XX.
The Portuguese and Spanish feminist movement only began to take form in the early twentieth century, when in the United States of America and in Western Europe the debate over the women’s vote was already going on for several decades. The reasons for this delay are mainly the high rate of female illiteracy, the strong influence of the Catholic Church on women and the late entry of women of the middle and upper classes into the labor market. With this doctoral thesis we want to analyze the social-political context in which the discussion on female suffrage arose in the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the constitutional regimes, in the nineteenth century, and the in which Portuguese and Spanish women gained the right to participate in national parliamentary elections, either as voters or as candidates, in the 1930s
