This paper aims to present, on the one hand, the concept of innovation from a linguistic point of view and on the other, show the specificity of a particular innovation: the social - always linked in different degrees to the technological one. In this work, some characteristics of the term are presented and exemplified in some case studies in Portuguese society. Through some practical examples, a gradual “continuum” may be identified. At one extreme, Third Sector organizations, focused on social issues, use technological aspects to improve the resources available for social innovation. On the other hand, institutions that are interested in improving benefits, also create innovative social strategies. However, these are subordinated and supported by technological resources. With these results, some clues can be obtained for the study of social innovation in other fields. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar, por um lado, o conceito de inovação do ponto de vista linguístico e, do outro, mostrar uma inovação específica: a social – sempre atrelada em graus diferenciados à tecnológica. Com tal trabalho, estabelecem-se algumas características próprias do termo, procurando, exemplificá-las a partir de alguns estudos de caso em território português. Através dos exemplos práticos, identifica-se uma espécie de continuum gradativo. Num extremo, organizações do Terceiro Setor, que objetivam atender questões sociais, utilizam aspectos tecnológicos para aprimorar os recursos disponíveis para a inovação social. Por outro lado, instituições que visam fins mais lucrativos, que têm como objetivo a melhoria dos lucros, também criam estratégias sociais inovadoras. No entanto, estas estão subordinadas e amparadas pelos recursos tecnológicos. Com os resultados apontados, pistas são colocadas para o estudo da inovação social em outros dominios.
