O castelo de Almeida terá sido o espaço fundador da vila e o seu centro político‑militar até finais da Idade Média, permanecendo como armazém de material de guerra da praça‑forte seiscentista até inícios do século XIX, quando uma enorme explosão o arruinou. Tendo uma origem medieval, a fortificação é também um dos melhores exemplares em Portugal da arquitectura militar de transição. Pouco foi, porém, o contributo da arqueologia para o seu estudo e valorização, facto que levou ao surgimento do projecto cujos resultados aqui se sintetizam (2007‑2012). Os trabalhos permitiram incrementar o conhecimento sobre a evolução da configuração interna do recinto no flanco Norte e Este, que havia sido intervencionado pela DGEMN, bem como das suas ocupações medievais e modernas. The castle of Almeida may have been the founding place of this village and its political centre until the end of medieval age. From the 17th until the beginning of the 19th century, it remained as arsenal storage, when a huge explosion destroyed it. Having a medieval origin, the fortress is also one of the best examples in Portugal of the so called transition style in European military architecture. However, since archaeology’s contribute to its study and valorisation was almost inexistent, we have decided to develop this new project, which results are presented here (2007‑2012). This work allowed a better knowledge on the evolution of the internal configuration of the North and East wings of the perimeter (an area already intervened by DGEMN) as well as its medieval and modern occupation.
