- The role of art in coastal and marine sustainabilityPublication . Matias, Ana; Carrasco, A. Rita; Pinto, Bruno; Reis, Jaime; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH)Sustainability is a universal goal that requires balancing social, economic and environmental dimensions, and that applies to both terrestrial and marine environments. Several authors argue that arts are valuable tools to frame and engage with current environmental issues related to sustainability, including pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss. Accordingly, our research question is: What is the role of art in the sustainability of coasts and seas? We searched our research question on the two most important scientific databases of articles (Scopus and Web of Science) and retrieved 1,352 articles. We narrowed the articles to 79 studies that actually address our question through screening. The dataset describes a variety of artworks from the four art categories (literary, media, performing and visual) around the world, although the more frequent countries are the US, the UK and Australia. We found that visual arts are more common (~40%), and engagement is a highlighted pursued impact (~40%) by these artistic practices. Other authors also intend to promote marine conservation and restoration, management, education and activism. Only 19 articles of the dataset measured the impact of artistic activities on their audience. This subset shows evidence of art contributions to sustainability mainly through raising awareness, learning, and promoting engagement and enjoyment of project participants. Through this work, we set the current state of knowledge on this emerging topic, and argue that further research and new strategies of impact measurement are needed to thoroughly understand the effect of art on coastal/marine sustainability.
- Music and EmotionsPublication . Baraldi, Filippo; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH); Institute of Musicology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA)In the first part of this article, I analyze the emotional life of a Roma community of Transylvania by describing several performances in which participants cry along with music. This analysis results in a model showing how the relations between musical actions and emotional behaviors change according to the performance context. In the second part, I propose some theoretical questions on musical emotion by comparing my field data with those coming from other parts of the world. These revolve around notions such as “living quality of the music,” “personal tunes,” “sonic agents,” and “musical empathy.”
The words of Fernando Cabral Martins (2005), which serve as the inspiration for this article’s title, refer to the short film Os Dois Soldados [The Two Soldiers] directed by João César Monteiro and first broadcast on RTP 2 in 1979. However, they also describe a phenomenon observed in two other short films in the same “series”: A Mãe (The Mother, 1978-1979) and O Amor das Três Romãs (The Love the Three Pomegranates, 1979). In all three films spatial and temporal indeterminacy is a central narrative element, emphasizing their fantastical dimension. In this sense, the aim of this research is to understand how music interacts with the other film elements to “indetermine” or blur, the space-time of action in these short films. Through audiovisual analysis and by examining the interaction of preexisting music with the imagery, diegesis, and other elements, we propose a new way of interpreting these three films, focusing on their musical components and the complexity they bring on the cinematic object. This research confirms that, in these short films, music serves as an element of temporal and spatial dispersion.
Bezerra, Frederico Freire; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH); Departamento de Ciências Musicais (DCM); ANPOCS - Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Ciências SociaisPublic opinion and part of the academic community consolidated the position that, during the period of the 1964 military dictatorship, Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools functioned as an ideological arm of the regime, reproducing an adherence that would have mostly contaminated their plots. Seeking to understand its real impact in that period, we carried out a survey of the themes addressed by the schools in the main group of the Rio carnival between the years 1968 and 1984. To do so, we focused on five thematic fields: racial theme, predominantly black, tangentially black, predominantly indigenous, and adherent theme. Analyzing the historical context in light of theories of resistance (Gilroy, 1993; Johansson and Lalander, 2012; Vinthagen and Johansson, 2013; Scott, 2013), combined with studies by Cavalcanti (1994, 1999) and Tureta and Araújo (2013), what we actually found was that the adherent content proved to be much less influential than imagined. Samba schools predominantly developed a set of plots that addressed, whether partially or dominantly, a comprehensive universe of black themes as a way of circumventing censorship and reaffirming the Afro-Brazilian cultural importance that has guided this practice since its early hours.
- Lee Konitz’s use of standards’ melody in improvisationPublication . Prazeres, Gonçalo; Pinheiro, Ricardo; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH)The main goal of this article is to examine the mechanisms through which Lee Konitz uses the melody of jazz standards in his improvisation process. Beginning with the transcription and comprehensive analysis of five improvised solos, and using the thematic analysis method, we identified melodic ideas coming from the songs on which the saxophonist builds some of his solos. Our conclusion is that Lee Konitz, besides clearly quoting the melody of jazz standards on which he improvises, also frequently uses some of its notes as target-notes, and develops melodic motifs inspired by that same melody.
- From Grove to TemplePublication . Pereira, Filipe; Komath, Rajesh; Edelman, Joshua; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH)Sacred groves are very important elements of Hinduism, and take on different characteristics in different parts of India, just like Hinduism does. However, due to political, cultural or social processes, some of these forests have been converted into temples, and the rituals practiced there have been brought closer to the dominant Brahminical cult, with an evident loss to the richness and cultural diversity of Indian spiritual practices. Those processes can mostly be viewed as Templisation, Sanskritization, and Hinduization. In this short essay we examine the consequences of those procedures upon the sacred groves of northern Kerala, and especially upon the ritual of the teyyams, living gods who inhabit these woods.
