Teresa; Correia, Clara Nunes; Caetano, Maria do Céu; Pereira, Susana Paula Gomes Costa; Costa, Manuel Luís; Departamento de Linguística (DL); Centro de Linguística da UNL (CLUNL)This article presents the research strategy for the ProGramma group of the Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The ProGramma project aims to study several aspects of European Portuguese grammar from the perspective of the theoretical framework of grammaticalization. Grammaticalization research claims to unify linguistic phenomena occurring in different linguistic levels. Moreover, it has motivated in the last decade a wealth of discussion surrounding a number of theoretical and methodological issues, thus providing an adequate context for the development of the study of different processes – morphological, syntactic, semantic – both from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. In this article, we will present an overview of the theoretical background and main research topics, and will briefly describe some selected case studies.
- Rivalidade sufixal e polissemiaPublication . Caetano, Maria do Céu; Departamento de Linguística (DL); Centro de Linguística da UNL (CLUNL)Rooted in the generally accepted definition of isofunctional / rival / competing suffixes, some arguments that favour or reject the existence of suffixal rivalry will be considered. The nominal suffixes of the Portuguese Language that concur or had concurred between themselves are then analysed. Presuming that the “one meaning-one form” principle is not always observable, we will discuss what type of restrictions constrain the selection of one particular suffix to the detriment of another one and the consequences of the suffixal rivalry, namely the precise relations between suffixal competition and productivity and polysemy issues.
- Sobre o conceito de composicionalidade em morfologiaPublication . Caetano, Maria do Céu; Departamento de Linguística (DL); Centro de Linguística da UNL (CLUNL)This presentation intends to underline the importance of the concept of compositionality for morphological studies, particularly for those that focus on derivation. Without denying the deep relation between formal and semantic transparency and productivity, since any neologism is formed by regular processes and is, in principle, compositional, I’ll try to justify that non productive processes (Portuguese -ura nominalizations) are characterized by the same degree of compositionality of productive processes (Portuguese -dor nominalizations). Some inherited words and loans that synchronically can be taken as derived compositional words will also be considered. Finally, it will be discussed how the knowledge of the history of words has or has not some repercussions in morphological analysis.
- Os prefixos de negação nas gramáticas históricas do português e do galegoPublication . López Viñas, Xoán; Caetano, Maria do Céu; Departamento de Linguística (DL); Centro de Linguística da UNL (CLUNL)We intend in this work to analyse the negative prefixes, giving special attention to data from Portuguese and Galician historical grammars. Previous to the study of that kind of prefixes, we will specify what we understand for historical grammar and, subsequently, we will establish the catalogue of Portuguese and Galician grammars comprised under that designation. Afterwards, we will briefly discuss the statute of the prefixes in those grammars, given that some authors include them in the derivation, while for others they are part of compounding. Finally, we attempt to account for the prefixes properties, with special focus on the characterization of a-, anti-, des- and in- negative prefixes.
- A relação forma –Publication . Caetano, Maria do Céu; Departamento de Linguística (DL); Centro de Linguística da UNL (CLUNL)With this short paper I intend to contrast two of the main morphological analysis models, i.e. the structuralist model (cf. Bloomfield 1933) and the generative model (cf. Aronoff 1976), comparing the two perspectives of analysis, one fundamentally methodological and other mainly theoretical, which still today are under discussion.
