Governar o Atlântico: A Infanta D. Beatriz e a Casa de Viseu (1470-1485)

Abstract

Quando D. Fernando, duque de Viseu-Beja, morreu em 1470, foi a sua mulher, a D. Beatriz, quem assumiu o governo do vasto património da Casa de Viseu. Impondo-se a um mundo de homens, geriu com mestria os seus domínios, destacando-se a sua acção relativamente aos arquipélagos atlânticos, assim como o papel central que assumiu nas negociações de paz com Castela, que estiveram na origem do Tratado de Alcáçovas, o primeiro a incluir disposições acerca dos espaços extra-europeus. A premência de analisar detalhadamente a política ultramarina da Casa de Viseu neste período, o modo como decorreu o seu papel crucial na ocupação dos arquipélagos atlânticos e a urgência de estudar o papel das mulheres em posições de poder no dealbar da Modernidade dão o mote a este nosso projecto. É nosso objectivo compreender a actuação governativa de D. Beatriz enquanto chefe da Casa de Viseu tendo como limite espacial o Atlântico.

When the Duke of Viseu and Beja died in 1470, his wife, the infanta Dona Beatriz, took over the administration of the vast heritage of the House of Viseu, in the name of her children. Imposing herself in a man’s world, she managed their domain with skill, especially that of the Atlantic archipelagos, which occupied a prominent place in the Iberian politics of the time. Analysing in detail the overseas policy of the House of Viseu during this period, as well as Beatriz’s key role in the occupation and colonisation of the Atlantic islands and the pressing need to study the relation between noble women and power at the dawn of Early Modern period, supports the main topic/subject for this project. Our goal is to understand the ruling of the infant Dona Beatriz whilst head of the House of Viseu, taking into special consideration the spatial boundary of the Atlantic domain.
