RESUMO - As desigualdades socioeconómicas (SE) no tabagismo na adolescência contribuem para asdesigualdades em saúde nos adultos. Este trabalho mediu a associac¸ão entre estatuto SEe tabagismo em Portugal, através de um grupo de 1.900 adolescentes entre 14-17 anos de6 escolas. A probabilidade de fumar regularmente foi estatisticamente mais elevada emfilhos de pai desempregado, nos alunos com pior desempenho escolar e maior semanada. Oestatuto SE do próprio adolescente tem maior influência que as condic¸ões SE da sua família.As políticas devem focar-se na situac¸ão do adolescente, promovendo o bem-estar na escolae integrac¸ão no sistema educativo.
ABSTRACT - tThe socioeconomic (SE) inequalities in smoking among adolescents contribute to healthinequalities in adulthood. This study aims at verifying the association between SE statusand smoking in Portugal, using a group of 1,900 students aged between 14 and 17 from 6schools. The likelihood of smoking was significantly greater among children of unemployedfathers, and among students with a lower academic performance and a higher personalincome. The adolescent’s own SE status is more influential than her family’s SE condition.Policies must focus the adolescent’s situation, by promoting the well-being at school andthe integration in the education system.
