It took 70 years before a newsmagazine was founded in Portugal to make this press segment, “invented” in the United States in 1923 with Time, a lasting and successful reality. Launched in 1993, Visão has lasted for over two decades, always as market leader. But the history of the Portuguese newsmagazine does not begin or end with Visão. This research has identified 15 titles published between 1967 and 2014 which can be classified as weekly general information magazines. We strove to make a structural depiction of each of the newsmagazines found: Vida Mundial (1967); Observador (1971); Opção (1976); Novo Observador (1978); Mais (1982); Grande Reportagem (1984); Sábado – I Série (1988); Face (1989); Época (1992); Visão (1993); Factos – I Series (1997); Factos – II Series (1998); Focus (1999); Tempo (2003); and Sábado – II Series (2004). The analysis covered the more relevant issues and sought data on publishers, editors, teams, graphic projects and editorial charters. Attention was also paid to the covers, since they take on the role of seductive communication apparatuses which sway the success of the publications at the newsstand. Before embarking on the labour of reconstructing the Portuguese path trodden by the newsmagazine, we outline the frameworks of the object. We start by placing the magazine in the media context, searching for the roots of this kind of press, as well as the features and specificities it presents to the field of journalism and to academia. Then, the concept of newsmagazine is discussed, and we propose that it be considered as a “newszine”, in other words, a type of hybrid publication which gathers influences of newspapers and magazines, combining elements of two universes which run parallel outside this exception link. We also characterize the cover of the magazine, an object located at the crossroads of marketing, culture and journalism. By belonging to a general information publication, the cover of the news magazine has added responsibilities. Analysing it has helped enrich the portrayal of this type of magazine in Portugal.
