RESUMO - A exposição profissional a látex em meio hospitalar é praticamente
ubiquitária já que diversos materiais de uso
hospitalar o contêm, ainda que a sua referência seja
essencialmente associada às luvas. A elevada frequência e
gravidade de doenças respiratórias, dermatológicas, e até
reacções anafilácticas, em indivíduos sensibilizados expostos
a látex justifica que as áreas científicas da Medicina
do Trabalho e da Alergologia desenvolvam programas de
prevenção dos eventuais efeitos adversos associados ao seu
uso. Por outro lado, a criação de serviços de saúde ocupacional
nos estabelecimentos de saúde poderá contribuir
para a redução da incidência desta patologia através do
desenvolvimento de actividades de gestão desse risco profissional.
ABSTRACT - In the hospital setting occupational latex exposition is almost universal although gloves constitute the most regular agent. The frequency and severity of latex reactions in sensitized workers justify the execution of prevention programs by immunoallergy and occupational medicine professionals. On the other hand, the implementation of occupational medicine departments in heath care centers contributes for the reduction of latex allergy incidence through the development of adequate risk management activities concerning this professional hazard.
