Nesta tese, estuda-se a expansão geográfica e social da cultura literária impressa,
entre meados do século XVIII e o início do século XX. A análise, discutindo o conceito
de periferia, visa contribuir para o conhecimento do meio cultural contemporâneo e para
a reflexão em torno do conceito de espaço cultural que a circulação do impresso oferece.
Investigam-se, por um lado, as instituições e os agentes que localmente legitimaram
e disponibilizaram a cultura tipográfica, avaliando as suas motivações e recursos
intelectuais e, por outro lado, partindo dos objectos impressos em circulação, estudam-se
os contextos históricos e as práticas concretas de acesso à leitura e à escrita, caracterizando-
se comunidades – reais e imaginárias – de leitores, que, em conjunto, mas por
diferentes vias, desenharam o padrão da cultura literária oitocentista.
This thesis studies the geographical and social expansion of the literary printed culture between the middle of the 18th century and the early 20th century. The analysis, discussing the concept of the periphery, aims to help increase knowledge about the contemporary cultural environment and encourage reflection about the concept of the cultural sphere created by the circulation of printed material. On the one hand, the local institutions and agents that enabled and made the printed culture available are researched, evaluating the motivations and intellectual resources behind them. On the other hand, based on the printed items in circulation, a study is carried out of the historical contexts and the specific practices of access to reading and writing, characterising the communities – real and imaginary – of readers who, together, but in different ways, designed the pattern of the nineteenth-century literary culture.
