Sabe-se que os charlatões indígenas desempenham um papel condenável perante a ciência, sobretudo porque são considerados, pelos selvagens, como possuidores de dons sobrenaturais para adivinhar e combater os feitiços que acreditam ser a fonte de muitos males.
Com poucas exceções, os meninos indígenas entre 12 e 16 anos são submetidos à operação de circuncisão em condições de higiene deploráveis, colocando em risco a saúde e até mesmo a vida dos circuncidados.
Parece ser vantajoso recorrer aos charlatões no que diz respeito à assistência médica que deve ser prestada aos indígenas, desde que lhes seja ensinada primeiro a realizar os tratamentos, com os cuidados de higiene indispensáveis, pois só assim poderão ser recenseados para que se possa melhor supervisionar a sua atividade.
Os charlatões conhecem muitas plantas medicinais. Aproveitando o estágio desses charlatões nos postos de saúde, poder-se-á organizar herbários das plantas que eles utilizam nos tratamentos.
It is known that the native quack docttors act a rôle that science condemns. ln addition they are considered as having a supernatural power to divine and combat the witchcraft which they believe to be the origin of much evil and illness. With rare exceptions the native boyes aged between 12 and 16 are circuncised and this operation is preformed in such deficient hygienic conditions that it menaces the health and even the life of the circuncised. It seems to be advantageous to make the quack doctors useful in the medical assistance to the natives since they have been previously taught how to apply tretatments with the indispensable cares of hygiene. By this way only they can be enlisted and their activity be better inspected. The quack doctors know a great number of medical plants. Taking advantage of the apprenticeship period of the quack doctors in the health service centers a herbarium of the plants used by them in their treatments can thus be organized.
