Culicoides are insects generally of tiny proportions of 1 to 2 M/m, belonging to the Ceratopogonidae family and found almost everywhere in the world, with the possible exception, according to Edwards, Oldroyd and Smart, of Patagonia and New Zealand. The females are bloodsuckers, biting, it seems, almost exclusively mammals and birds, for which they have sufficiently developed mouthparts, unlike the males who feed on plant juices. Some species bite mosquitoes in order to obtain blood directly from their stomachs. The species Culicoides anophelis Edws. bites mainly anopheles, to which it can remain attached for a long time (up to 48 hours) and be transported by them in flight.
