Upon reflection on the Portuguese society and its representations during the effective government of Queen Maria I, between 1777 and 1792, we seem to lack a more detailed perception of the relationship between the authors and the recipients of cultural production, as well as of the spaces in which it is legitimised. With this research, we intend to question how the articulation between spaces, both public and private, and the authors and the recipients of cultural production allows us to relate ideas with cultural practices, and to present a relational view on the field of culture in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Throughout this period there was a confrontation between two paradigms, the traditional and the modern, which took place in the middle ground between public and private order, between the enjoyment of letters and the mastery of the rules of the use of words. Similarly, the categories of thought of the Enlightenment were soon to be seen in the communities of intellectual conviviality. By analysing the field of eighteenth-century culture, we looked at the interactions between the production and consumption of ideas and their communication, between collective representations and personal behaviour, institutions and their practices, in order to better understand the new public space in which underwent the ideological tensions of the second half of the eighteenth century. To this end, we intend to analyse the profile and the networks of intellectuals. We will identify their social circles, their relationships with each other and with the Court. We also consider it essential to study patronage and clientele, in a relationship of sponsorship and protection. It is important to analyse more or less formal networks of collaboration, both among individuals and among the cultural institutions that hosted them. Since the central theme of the thesis is the field of culture in the last decades of the eighteenth century, focusing on intellectuals, society and the Court, we have highlighted the profiles of some Portuguese scholars who, according to us, could have contributed to spreading the new programme of the Enlightenment, and who stood out the most in the various intellectual circles and at Court. Just as we want to develop a representation of the intellectuals, it also seems important to us to understand the actions of the Sovereign, to assess what she has or hasn't managed to implement, what she may have left behind, and what may have been influenced by the personalities surrounding her. Thus, in order to better understand this new public space in which the ideological tensions of the late eighteenth century were projected, we seek to explore the field of interactions between the production and consumption of ideas and communication, collective representations and personal behaviour, through works, institutions and their practices, and epistolary transmission.
