"Organismal homeostasis is maintained through highly complex and tightly regulated
mechanisms that ensure equilibrium, independently of external challenges. Extreme
challenges can disrupt this equilibrium, leading to the development of deleterious conditions,
such as autoimmunity, cancer or chronic inflammation. A prime example of a condition
imposing extreme organismal challenges is sepsis. Defined as an acute inflammatory
condition arising from an infection by any type of pathogen, sepsis is hallmarked by a
dysregulated host response that can fail to resolve the infection while, in parallel, inducing
extensive tissue damage to the host. This is because the condition of sepsis results from
extreme deviations of the host immune response from the homeostatic balance, wherein
resistance and tolerance responses become erroneously orchestrated.(...)"
