Resumo(s)
The deposit and refund system (DRS) for packaging has proven to be a quick and effective solution in various countries, with collection rates in the European Union (EU) ranging from 70% to 98%. In Portugal, a pilot project was implemented from March 2020 to December 2022, specifically targeting non-reusable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic beverage packaging with volumes between 0.1 and 2 liters. A total of 23 reverse vending machines were installed in large retail stores across the mainland. The goal of this initiative was to gain knowledge for the future implementation of a DRS that would include other types of packaging materials.
