In the past decades, the outstanding progress made towards utilizing Physcomitrium patens as a production host for biopharmaceuticals has established moss biotechnology on an industrial scale. Recent efforts
revealed that P. patens has also potential for the production of so-called natural products, such as terpenoids, lipids and phenylpropanoids. Nonetheless, due to extensive knowledge gaps in the understanding of these
biosynthetic routes and their regulation in mosses, the utilization of P. patens for the production of natural compounds is still in its infancy.
