A Biblioteca do Palácio Nacional de Mafra teve a sua génese durante o Iluminismo e integra um valioso acervo que foi mantido praticamente intacto desde a sua conceção e constituição. Com várias valências, esta biblioteca servia o rei e respetiva família, a corte, a escola e o convento. Nesta tese, procuramos enquadrar o aparecimento da biblioteca, averiguar as razões que levaram à sua conceção, dotação e constituição no contexto europeu e português, avaliar a sua atualidade e compreender o lugar que ocupa na cultura científica portuguesa e europeia do séc. XVIII. Na caracterização do seu acervo, a vasta variedade de conteúdos e de títulos nas temáticas científicas, levou-nos a focarmos a nossa análise nas áreas do saber em que a matemática é central no período em análise, concretamente a física, a instrumentação e as engenharias militar e civil.
The Library of the National Palace of Mafra was created during the Enlightenment and houses a valuable collection that has been kept almost intact since its inception and establishment. With various functions, this library served the king and his family, the court, the school and the monastery. In this thesis, we aim to contextualize the origins of the library, investigate the reasons that led to its conception, endowment and constitution in the European and Portuguese context, assess its topicality, and understand its place in 18th-century Portuguese and European scientific culture. In the characterization of its collection, the wide variety of contents and titles in scientific themes led us to focus our analysis on the areas of knowledge in which mathematics is central in the period under analysis, specifically physics, instrumentation and military and civil engineering.
