A balanced diet is key for an animal’s health and well-being. Choices such as what to eat or how much food to ingest have a great impact on the overall fitness of animals. However, the molecular and neuronal mechanisms that influence these decisions are poorly understood. This is particularly true for dietary proteins, which are important determinants of lifespan and reproduction. I combined behavioral, anatomical and bioinformatic analysis with nutritional, microbial, molecular and neuronal manipulations to identify novel mechanisms underlying protein appetite.
