- Evaluation of One Health InitiativesPublication . Chantziaras, Ilias; Pessoa, Joana; Meneghi, Daniele de; Aragrande, Maurizio; Fonseca, Ana Glória; Häsler, Barbara; NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM)This chapter equips you with the tools to evaluate One Health initiatives that address health issues at the intersection of humans, animals and the environment. It emphasizes the importance of a systematic approach to assess these initiatives’ effectiveness and impact. The chapter uses the Theory of Change (ToC) as a framework for outlining how the initiative will achieve its goals. Stakeholder involvement is a key theme, as you will learn how to collaborate with them to define the evaluation approach and select measurable indicators based on the ToC. The chapter also dives into data collection methods for both quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (interviews) data. Ultimately, it equips you to use evaluation results to inform decisions, improve programme design and strengthen future One Health efforts, ensuring a lasting positive influence on interconnected One Health topics across various sectors.
- Doing One Health! Using Participatory and Systems-Thinking Steps to Develop and Implement a One Health InterventionPublication . McIntyre, K. Marie; Thomson, Deborah J.; Travis, Dominic; Boriani, Elena; Fonseca, Ana Glória; Unwin, Steve; NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM)This chapter describes the necessary thought processes to develop interventions to improve a health outcome using One Health approaches, considering how you will share and disseminate knowledge learned by communicating with colleagues and collaborators. Whilst developing acceptable and feasible interventions against problems needing a One Health solution, you work with your stakeholders, mapping out the systems’ complexities including identifying feedback loops and exploring alternative dynamics to mitigate system instability. Then, you develop a potential intervention(s) whilst considering mechanisms to balance the dynamics of stakeholders within the system, as well as the temporal and spatial scales at which your intervention(s) will operate. Effectively communicating will facilitate the collaborative process. Finally, dissemination of your findings is vital to create appropriate impact for your work. Having worked through this chapter, you will understand how to share and synthesize ideas using systems thinking, and efficient and effective communication, to best disseminate the knowledge learned.
- Coercion in Contemporary Mental Health ServicesPublication . Aluh, Deborah Oyine; Aluh, Deborah; De Almeida, José Miguel Caldas; JM, Caldas-de-Almeida; Richter, Dirk; Whittington, Richard; NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM); Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) - pólo NMSIn this chapter, we introduce some of the key ideas relating to the use of coercion in mental health services around the world. This introduction focuses upon clarifying the key terms in the area, providing an historical overview of the topic, and considering current evidence on contextual factors which are linked to high and low rates of coercion. We also consider attempts to estimate coercion rates in different countries around the world and start to examine the question of whether coercion can ever be justified on the basis of ‘best interest’. Finally, we note some of the interventions which have shown the most promise in enabling organisations to reduce their reliance on coercive interventions and move towards a fully human rights-based approach to mental health care. This chapter therefore provides a basis for consideration of the many issues raised throughout this volume.
