Tradição e inovação tecnológica e cultural nos inícios do século XIX. Análise do sítio arqueológico dos Paços do Concelho (Almada)

Abstract

Os trabalhos arqueológicos levados a cabo nos Paços do Concelho, em Almada, no ano de 1984, puseram a descoberto um pequeno silo na sala 1 e uma cisterna, na sala contígua. A presente dissertação incide sobre o estudo do espólio recuperado no interior dessa cisterna, cujo abandono ocorreu nas primeiras décadas do século XIX. O edifício onde se encontra, segundo muitos historiadores, deve remontar ao século XVIII, supostamente a antiga Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, contudo os trabalhos arqueológicos realizados no interior não permitiram esta comprovação. A coleção aqui analisada reflete os quotidianos da população de Almada numa época em que a produção artesanal, ainda que continuando a marcar profundamente a cultura material doméstica, começa a partilhar o seu espaço com algumas produções industriais, algumas de origem lisboeta, outras importadas do Reino Unido. A coleção em análise corresponde na sua maioria a objetos cerâmicos, mas também a vidros, metais e objetos em osso, refletindo os hábitos quotidianos e costumes daquela sociedade. A partir do estudo destes objetos será possível observar as alterações tecnológicas que a cultura material foi alvo, bem como as implicações e alterações culturais e sociais que aqueles objetos refletem.

The archaeological work carried out in the Paços do Concelho building, in Almada, in 1984, uncovered a small storage pit in room 1 and a cistern in the adjoining room. The present dissertation focuses on the study of the material culture recovered inside this cistern, which was abandoned in the first decades of the 19th century. The building where it is located, according to many historians, dates back to the 18th century, supposedly the old Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, however the archaeological work carried out did not confirm if the building was in fact the church. The collection reflects the daily lives of the population of Almada at a time when artisanal production, while still profoundly marking domestic material culture, begins to share its space with some industrial productions. Some of these items were made in Lisbon while others were imported from the United Kingdom. The collection under analysis corresponds mostly to ceramic objects, but also glass, metals and bone artefacts, reflecting the daily habits and customs of that society. From the study of these objects, it will be possible to observe the technological changes that the material culture was reflecting, as well as the implications and culture and social changes that those objects reveal.
