É objectivo deste estudo mostrar, através de exemplos seleccionados, as principais características da escultura portuguesa durante os 63 anos de vida de Afonso X o Sábio, isto é, durante o governo de quatro reis portugueses. Pretende-se sublinhar e demonstrar como nessas seis décadas a escultura portuguesa se manteve, acima de tudo, arreigada à arte herdada do século XII, numa clara resistência, mesmo que, aos poucos, fosse cedendo às novidades do estilo e da iconografia da arte mais moderna da Cristandade ocidental – o Gótico francês. The aim of this study is to show, through selected examples, the main characteristics of Portuguese sculpture during the 65 years of life of Alfonso X the Wise, that is, during the government of four Portuguese kings. It is intended to un-derline and demonstrate how in these six decades Portuguese sculpture has remai-ned, above all, rooted in the art inherited from the 12th century, in a clear resistance, even if, little by little, it gave in to the novelties of the style and iconography of the art of vanguard of Western Christianity – French Gothic.
