This article investigates how the Estado Novo managed the commemoration of the Double Centenary of the Foundation and the Restoration of the Independence of Portugal, solemnized in 1940 in the colonies. First, I explore the formal arrangements of this commemorative operation, as well as the related compromises reached. Then, I examine the different features of the commemorative discourse employed in the colonies. The hypothesis of this study can be stated simply: in the context of colonial and imperial domination, historical celebrations elucidate much more about colonialism and the political regime that manages it than about the memory of events they evoke.
