- Tracing the Artistic JourneyPublication . Palmeirim , Simão; Gil, Milene; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH); Forumul Inventatorilor RomaniThis paper examines the preparatory studies carried out by Almada Negreiros for the 1949 mural paintings at the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos Maritime Station, focusing on the evolution of the artist’s choices in terms of composition and the use of colours. By comparing these studies with the final work, the aim was to add new information regarding Almada’s creative process, offering new insights into his methodology and artistic decisions. The work was based on collating drawings from several archives and collections. Results showcase examples of how these studies can be seen as autonomous works, in some cases as ramifications and in other cases as a process of revisitation of recurrent themes of Almada’s visual and literary practice. Results also show how drawings became progressively more geometrical as the studies progressed, moving away from the more naturalistic figuration, and how colour followed the same path, becoming more vivid and sometimes unrealistic.
- Heteronímia e Dramatização Filosófica em Fernando PessoaPublication . Ribeiro, Nuno; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH)O presente artigo visa explorar as relações entre heteronímia e a constituição de um drama filosófico na obra de Fernando Pessoa, tendo por base os escritos filosóficos do espólio pessoano. Nesse sentido, o artigo encontra-se dividido em duas partes: uma primeira parte onde analisamos a relação entre o processo de dramatização e a constituição de um pluralismo filosófico no período pré-heteronímico; uma segunda parte em que explicitamos as relações entre o conceito de “drama em gente” e a construção de uma filosofia pluralista no período heteronímico.
- The Educated African and Colonialist Myths in Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to the NorthPublication . Chouiten, Lynda; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH); Nordic Association of African StudiesThrough the example of Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North (1969), this article argues that education as provided by the colonial school system is an “undecidable” (Derrida), at once empowering and disempowering the educated non-Westerner. On the one hand, the knowledge and language appropriated by Mustafa Sa’eed (Salih’s African prodigy) enable him not only to belie, through his own academic success, the derogatory clichés regarding the Black man’s intellectual inferiority, but also to denounce imperialism in the impressive number of books he has written. On the other hand, as a system which perpetuates traditional values and codes of thinking, rather than promoting originality and difference, the (Western) educational machine ensures that its products unconsciously absorb Western ‘truths’ about the passionate nature and sexual appetite of the native races. This article shows that Mustafa Sa’eed reproduces these ‘truths’ both in his lectures and in his lifestyle.
- Diálogos entre escola e uma-lulik (cultura)Publication . Costa de Sousa, Rosiete; Paulino, Vicente; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH)Este artigo propõe a discussão da ação afirmativa para pensar a valorização, para inclusão no currículo escolar de modo mais contundente e efetivo, da experiência da uma-lulik, seus saberes, suas práticas como forma de reparação e de justiça social e cognitiva. Busca-se discutir a criação de atos de currículo por meio de com-versações curriculantes e culturais como ação afirmativa de valorização das culturas locais timorenses, nomeadamente, da experiência ancestral timorense corporificada na uma-lulik mostrando sua atualidade e relação com questões da contemporaneidade. A ideia da ação afirmativa é trazida neste texto com a intenção de fortalecer e mobilizar o debate em torno de diálogos entre escola e uma-lulik, para a inclusão desta última como experiência social, estética, ontológica e epistemológica na política educacional timorense.
- Poor lonesome poets, Alberto Pimenta y la utilidad de la poesíaPublication . Meirim, Joana; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH)El presente artículo pretende analizar la reflexión de Alberto Pimenta sobre el lugar que ocupan los poetas en la sociedad contemporánea, a partir de una lectura atenta del último poema de Autocataclismos (2014), donde encontramos los siguientes versos: “los poetas son útiles / hacen versos / poor lonesome poets.” Este poema será, así, el pretexto para discutir la utilidad de los poetas en la república, aspecto varias veces abordado por Pimenta en poemas, ensayos y entrevistas. El análisis de este poema convocará incluso otros textos, principalmente, la conferencia de Adorno, “Rede über Lyrik und Gesellschaft” –“Discurso sobre poesía lírica y sociedad”–, texto fundamental para comprender el arte político de Alberto Pimenta.
- Herberto Helder e a Paixão DionisíacaPublication . Neves, Sérgio; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH)“O que é o dionisíaco?”, interroga Nietzsche em O nascimento da tragédia. O que é, e se é possível, “morrer gregamente”, indaga Herberto Helder, no seu poema “Li algures que os gregos antigos não escreviam necrológios”, em A faca não corta o fogo. O presente ensaio tem, assim, o objetivo de relacionar estas duas questões, dando conta das feições dionisíacas de Helder, a partir da leitura do poema. De que modo o poeta transmuda os seus pés em cascos de sátiro e se torna um iniciado dionisíaco? Parece que o segredo dessa metamorfose reside na paixão. Mas “que paixão?”, pergunta ainda o poeta. Considerando que o dionisíaco passa por aceitar com paixão a vida e o absurdo da existência, arriscarei, então, que a possibilidade de morrer gregamente passa por viver gregamente e que a paixão necessária para tal encontra-se em Dioniso, enquanto símbolo e princípio filosófico.
- The extreme calligraphy of the world in the poetry of Herberto HelderPublication . Neves, Sérgio; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH); Australasian Association of Writing ProgramsThe poetry of Herberto Helder assumes the writing as an “extreme calligraphy of the world”, as he presents in Photomaton & Vox. On one hand, his poetry merges poem, body, and world, fabricating in the poem an original metaphor of the world and the body. On the other hand, this extreme calligraphy is also rooted in a Dionysian nature. This idiom destroys the conventional syntaxes, without losing the musical rhythm of the pulsation of the heart and the earth. His poetry is a body full of secrets and taboos working on the transmutations of substances, matters and sensations. Therefore, the presence of the alchemical thought and the Dionysian principle are strong lines in this investigation, which leads us to an innovative poetic form, and, consequently, to a new world. This article will aim to describe how the poetry of Herberto Helder builds an extreme calligraphy through the body, reinforcing the correspondence between it and the world and the transmutation of the poetic matter. Thinking about the alchemical process and the Dionysian power, the article demonstrates how the poet destabilises the limits of language, in a movement of destruction and reconstruction of poetic matter.
- La légende de Saint OnofrePublication . Nunes, Natália Maria Lopes; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH); University of Ain Temouchent Belhadj BouchaibDans cet article, on présente la vie de saint Onofre, la femme qui «efface» les vestiges de sa féminité, annule son corps de femme comme possible objet de tentation et de désir. Dans une perspective comparatiste, on cherche trouver les racines anciennes de la thématique de la femme déguisée en homme qui a été très répandue au Moyen Âge et qui s’est développée à partir d’une légende. Comme d’autres hagiographies, notamment celles de la «Vie de sainte Marie Égyptienne » et de la «Vie de sainte Pélagie», Onofre, lui aussi, a souffert une métamorphose. Les étapes de la vie d’Onofre, et des autres femmes avec un parcours pareil, semblent présenter les deux aspects d’Aphrodite énoncés par Platon dans Le Banquet - l'Aphrodite Pandemos (terrestre et charnelle) et l’Aphrodite Ourania (céleste et spirituelle). Abstract In this article we present the life of Saint Onofre, the woman who “erases” the vestiges of her femininity, cancels her female body as a possible object of temptation and desire. In a comparative perspective, we seek to find the ancient roots of the theme of the woman disguised as a man which was very widespread in the Middle Ages and which developed from a legend. Like other hagiographies, notably those of the “Life of Saint Mary Egyptian” and the “Life of Saint Pelagia”, Onofre, too, underwent a metamorphosis. The stages of the life of Onofre, and of other women with a similar course, seem to present the two aspects of Aphrodite stated by Plato in The Banquet - the Aphrodite Pandemos (earthly and carnal) and the Aphrodite Ourania (celestial and spiritual).

- Travellers in Serra da Estrela (Portugal)Publication . Leitão, Isilda; Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição (IELT - NOVA FCSH)The Serra da Estrela (Mountain of Estrela) a landscape area integrated in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, was, from the 18th century onwards, a place of interest for erudite travellers, including scientists and intellectuals. It was they, through their pioneering spirit and their reports and stories, who helped to boost the Serra, in the interest that it presents today: a tourist destination, essentially of nature, but also of anthropological and historical interest. However, the Serra was shaken by devastating fires in 2022. We think that Literary Tourism, based on this literary memory, could favour this protected area. The objective of this work is, therefore, to provide literary contents about the Serra, in order to enrich it with other types of tourism experiences, namely literary itineraries.
