“O Serviço Médico-Militar Português durante a Grande Guerra.
“O Serviço Médico-Militar Português durante a Grande Guerra. Organização, Funcionamento e Repercussões” (The Portuguese Military Healthcare Service during the Great War. Organization, Logistics and Repercussions) analyzes one of the most active periods of the Portuguese military healthcare service, which occurred during the years 1914 to 1918. Based on a broad empirical basis, this doctoral thesis will examine the extent to which the Great War influenced military medicine, questioning about the evolution of this military healthcare machine – that, during the conflict, was confronted with the process of learning and evolution of other allied sanitary services. Observed in its various areas of intervention (Africa and Europe), the Portuguese militar healthcare service will be examined in dynamics as diverse as those of "militar medicine versus civilian medicine" or the medical relationships existing in its various operational theaters (Angola, Mozambique and France). On the Home Front, will also be highlighted some of the most important institutional connections, supporting the military healthcare service on the Portuguese capital. Faced with a clear evolution of the sanitary services of other intervening nations - notably France and Great Britain - and with the problems and clashes of ideas, present in this WWI troubled times, this work will give start to a more informed analysis of this Portuguese healthcare service, deepening our knowledge of its role in the medical and scientific development of those times - which will contribute to a future understanding of transnational issues related to the beginning of the medicalization of society (presente during the first decades of the XX century).
