Abstract

A situação periférica da Mauritânia na cartografia dos interesses imperiais, mas também na cartografia dos circuitos e interesses do turismo colonial, é o mote para este texto, que incidirá sobre a forma como a Mauritânia foi promovida turisticamente no quadro das colónias da África Ocidental Francesa. Aqui se explorará o seu “estatuto periférico”, através da forma como o território foi exibido nas Exposições Coloniais realizadas na metrópole, descrições que contribuíram para perpetuar o estatuto marginal do país no âmbito da narrativa colonial ligada ao lazer. The peripheral situation of Mauritania in the mapping of imperial interests, but also in the cartography of the circuits and interests of colonial tourism, is the motto for this text, which will focus on how Mauritania was touristically promoted within the framework of the colonies of French West Africa. Here we will explore its “peripheral status”, through the forms the territory was displayed at the Colonial Expositions held in the metropolis, accounts that contributed to perpetuate the country’s marginal status within the context of the colonial narrative linked to leisure.
