RESUMO - Descreve-se a relação entre clima e saúde em Portugal, a
partir do início das observações meteorológicas, salientando-
se o facto de muitas delas terem sido efectuadas ou
solicitadas por médicos. É dado particular destaque à série
de Lisboa e, sobretudo, a Marino Miguel Franzini (1779-
-1861), a quem se devem não só as observações entre 1815
e 1853, mas também estudos sobre a saúde pública e a
necrologia em Lisboa. É feita uma comparação entre a
investigação de Franzini sobre o ritmo estacional da mortalidade
(com máximo estival) e os dados recentes, em que
os valores mais elevados ocorrem nos meses de Inverno.
ABSTRACT - This article outlines the relationship between climate and health in Portugal since the beginning of meteorological observations, many of which were carried out or requested by doctors. Specially noteworthy are the Lisbon series, and above all Marino Miguel Franzini (1779-1861), to whom we owe not only the observations made between 1815 and 1853 but also studies into public health and necrology. The article makes a comparison between Franzini’s research into the seasonal rate of mortality (highest in summer) and recent data which shows that the highest rate occurs in the winter months.
