autonomia, responsabilidade e sentido crítico junto do
jovem.
(58%);
preocupações sobre a saúde;
insucesso escolar;
estão ligados à escola e à família;
actividade sexual;
de exercício físico;
• Os refrigerantes são tomados por 85,2% dos jovens;
SIDA).
ABSTRACT - Only recently have industrialized societies begun to take into consideration the specific physiological and psychological needs and capacities of adolescents. Through such studies adult society has, in recent decades, developed new ways in which to deal with the adolescent. In this light, a study of a descriptive, analytical and transveral nature was carried out with the objective of identifying the principal problem associated with adolescent lifestyles in the area of the Carnaxide Health Centre, and to propose a program which would promote independence, responsability and critical thinking in the adolescent. The population under study was made up of both male and female adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 attending the Vieira da Silva School, in Carnaxide. The selected cluster sample was made up of 81 adolescents belonging to grades 7, 8, and 9. Our data was obtained through a questionnaire, and the results were subject to both manual and computer-based statistical analysis. The principal conclusions of this study include: • The majority of adolescents under study are female (58%); • These individuals consider the family as a group with whom they can share their health care concerns; • Their principal health concerns include AIDS, drugs, parental relations and academic failure; • Their most pressing concerns are tied to scholastics and the family; • Generally speaking, they do not practice contraceptive methods in their sex lives; • Their diet is essentially made up of foods rich in simple carbohydrates and fats and 6.2% skip breakfast. These dietary habits are accompanied by limited physical activity; • Softdrinks are consumed by 85.2% of these youths; • Their goals/expectations include some universal values (e. g., peace, friendship, famine), building a family, holding a job, going to university and avoiding serious disease (cancer, AIDS).
