Estatura e peso em crianças de 6 a 11 anos da Ilha de Santa Maria, Açores

RESUMO - Estudou-se a estatura e o peso em 379 crianças de ambos
os sexos de idades compreendidas entre os 6 e os 11 anos
residentes na ilha de Santa Maria. Quando se compararam
as médias da estatura, do peso e do índice de massa corporal
entre ambos os sexos, não se verificaram diferenças
significativas. Para cada sexo, segundo a idade, geralmente
não se encontraram diferenças significativas quando se
compararam as médias da estatura e do peso destas crianças
de Santa Maria com outras da ilha das Flores e de uma
escola da região suburbana de Lisboa, havendo algumas
excepções para o peso. Para cada sexo, os valores da estatura
e do peso por idade e do peso por estatura foram
comparados com os valores de referência do NHANES I e
II, observando-se, na generalidade, que os valores médios
de Z-score são negativos; no entanto, em alguns casos, em
particular para o peso por estatura, as médias são positivas.
A maioria dos indivíduos estudados tem estatura ou
peso médios e baixos, sendo mais frequentes crianças de
estatura muito baixa do que com peso muito baixo. Verificaram-
se diferenças significativas na estatura e no peso das
crianças de Santa Maria quando se consideraram os indicadores
sócio-económicos, escolaridade e profissão do pai e
tamanho da família. Sugere-se que nas crianças estudadas
os filhos de pai com um baixo nível de escolaridade, de
trabalhadores manuais e que pertencem a agregados familiares
mais numerosos são mais magros e baixos.
ABSTRACT - The height and weight of 379 schoolchildren, of both sex, 6 to 11 years old, living in Santa Maria island, were studied. There were no significant means height, weight and body mass index differences between girls and boys. The means height and weight, for Santa Maria girls and boys, were compared to others schoolchildren, from Flores island and from one school of Lisbon suburban area, and generally there were no significant differences, except for weight in some cases. The height for age, weight for age and height/weight for age were compared with reference data NHANES I and II. The means Z-scores were frequently negative for height and weight and positive for height/weight. The majority of children for height and weight were classified as average or below average. There were more children with low height than low weight. Significant height and weight differences, for socioeconomic factors, father’s education, father’s occupation and family dimension, were found. It’s suggest that Santa Maria children studied are more shorter and thin when living in large family, father’s have low education and manual occupation.
