RESUMO - O objectivo deste estudo exploratório, correlacional, transversal,
foi adaptar a life experiences survey (LES) aos doentes
diabéticos portugueses. Num primeiro momento, uma
amostra de conveniência foi constituída por 316 doentes
diabéticos, 55,4% do sexo feminino, com idades compreendidas
entre os 16 e os 84 anos de idade (M = 48,39;
(M = 12,35; DP = 3,07). Entre os participantes, 97,1%
apresentavam diabetes tipo 1, variando a duração da
doença entre os 7 meses e os 29 anos (M = 11,72;
DP = 6,39).
semana, tendo constituído a amostra do teste-reteste. A
ABSTRACT - The objective of this exploratory, transversal study was to adapt the life experiences survey (LES) to the Portuguese diabetic patients. In a first moment, we studied a convenience sample of 316 diabetic patients, 55.4% of whom were women, aged between 16 and 84 years old (M = 48.39; SD = 16.90), with a school level ranged between 0 and 17 years (M = 6.59; SD = 4.25), 41.8% with type 1 diabetes, 40.2% suffering from diabetic chronic complications. Diabetes duration in this group varied between 4 months and 43 years (M = 13.66; SD = 9.32). In a second moment, we studied a convenience sample of 34 diabetic patients, aged between 15 and 53 (M = 26.47; SD = 7.60), 40% of who were males; with a school level ranged between 6 and 18 years (M = 12.35; SD = 3.07), 91% suffered from type 1 diabetes and diabetes duration varied between 7 months and 29 years (M = 11.72; SD = 6.39). This second group was submitted to psychological assessment in two occasions, during the same week, constituting the retest sample. The Portuguese version of LES is a selfreport questionnaire, constituted by 47 items, with a Lickert type response, with seven positions, intended to evaluate the total stress throughout the last year, simultaneously distinguishing positive and negative life events, as well as the intensity of the impact on individuals’ life. We inspected the reliability with Cronbach alpha and test-retest procedures and concluded that this psychometric property was acceptable. We also verified that both sub-scales are significantly related to relevant stress dependent measures, namely anxiety and depression.
