A saúde do
p = 0,007).
ABSTRACT - The aim of the present study is to characterise the health promotion and health education (HPE) practices of the nurses of Vila Real Health Sub-Region (Sub-Região de Saúde de Vila Real, SRSVR) as well as to know the type of training they acquired in this area in order to identify their specific training needs. A cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out, and the generalised and quantitative information collected from questionnaires was conjugated with deep and interpretative information obtained from interviews. Of the universe of 211 nurses, 156 (72%) answered to the questionnaire. The greatest percentage of respondents (44.1%) fall in the participative concept, however the concepts shown by the interviewees are rather normative and centred in the transmission of information. Regarding the type of HPE concept, no statistically significant differences were found between nurses that have HPE training and those that do not have this type of training. The great majority of nurses say that they do HPE «many times» (38.8%) at individual level, whereas they consider that the nurse team does it only «sometimes» (43.4%). The «old person health» is the type of activity mostly referred by the inquired nurses (55.9%). The group that had training in HPE also carries out HPE activities more often than the group that did not have that training (statistic differences very significant, p = 0.007). Most of the respondents feel the need for more HPE training. Those that have got more training are also the ones that refer the need for more. The results show that there is a gap between the HPE offer and the need felt by nurses. The results suggest a need for nurses’ continuous HPE training. It should include two modules: one, more theoretical, on HPE concepts and models as well as on planning and developing activities in HPE; the other one, more practical, should include workgroup activities on the analysis of the situation and the planning of activities on health promotion and health education.
