dc.description.abstractStone tombs form part of the rich heritage of Portuguese sculpture, associated with important monuments. A considerable number of very degraded tombs, carved from highly porous limestone, are known. Several institutions have requested support from the José de Figueiredo Laboratory as its preservation is at risk. To slow down or mitigate these phenomena, different consolidation treatments have been developed. However, the efficacy and compatibility of these methodologies are often unsatisfactory, resulting in their limited success, as well as there is a paucity of practical solutions for their conservation. The present study aims to analyse limestone tombs from the perspective of their conservation and restoration, with a view to characterising the problem of alteration of very porous limestones, reviewing the treatment methodologies that have been applied and discussing the future retreatmenten
