Este estudo analisa o percurso do Partido Socialista Português (PSP) entre 1907 e 1933, examinando a sua ação política durante a fase final da Monarquia Constitucional (1907-1910), da I República (1910-1926) e da transição para o Estado Novo (1926-1933). Através da articulação entre história política e ciência política, e recorrendo à comparação com partidos congéneres europeus, procura-se demonstrar que o PSP operou como partido com estrutura, programa e estratégia própria. A investigação centra-se na organização interna e tipologia deste partido, na sua presença eleitoral, na intervenção parlamentar e municipal, nas relações com o sindicalismo e nos limites impostos à sua influência política pela arquitetura do sistema político, eleitoral e partidário português, quando comparado com os partidos socialistas da Europa Ocidental. Mais do que a avaliação do seu desempenho, importa a demonstração que PSP constituiu uma proposta política alternativa, inserida na tradição reformista da Internacional Socialista, da qual foi o porta-voz português, tendo participado também em redes de resistência antifascista ao Estado Novo. A sua trajetória ajuda a reavaliar o papel dos partidos minoritários na vida política portuguesa e a repensar a sua função histórica na cronologia proposta: a da Crise do Liberalismo.
This study examines the trajectory of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PSP) between 1907 and 1933, analysing its political action during the final phase of the Constitutional Monarchy (1907–1910), the First Republic (1910–1926) and the transition to the Estado Novo (1926–1933). By articulating political history and political science, and drawing on comparison with similar European parties, it seeks to demonstrate that the PSP operated as a party with its own organisational structure, programme and strategy. The research focuses on the party’s internal organisation and typology, its electoral presence, its parliamentary and municipal intervention, its relations with trade unionism, and the limits placed on its political influence by the architecture of the Portuguese political, electoral and party system, when compared with the socialist parties of Western Europe. More than the assessment of its performance, what matters is the demonstration that the PSP constituted an alternative political proposal, embedded in the reformist tradition of the Socialist International and that it also participated in networks of anti-fascist resistance to the Estado Novo. Its trajectory helps to reassess the role of minority parties in Portuguese political life and to rethink their historical function within the proposed chronology: that of the Crisis of Liberalism.
