Resumo(s)

The repair of existing structures with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) with the bonding technique has recently kept the attention of the scientific community due to their primary mechanical properties. However, the adhesive used to bond the FRP composite onto the substrate is a critical material with a strong impact on the success of the repaired structure. The use of ductile instead of brittle adhesives may locally improve the final bond performance of, e.g., carbon (C) FRP-to-steel joints. The complete debonding process still needs to be better understood, especially when these joints are studied through the tests of double-strap bonded joints subjected to the pull-pull test setup configuration. To mitigate this gap, an analytical model based on a trapezoidal bond-slip relationship was developed, and it is fully derived and introduced in this work. The proposed analytical model (PAM) enabled us to identify four distinct debonding processes in an FRP-to-substrate joint made with a ductile adhesive, which were analytically simulated and compared with the finite element method (FEM) for validation purposes. To show its wide application, the PAM was used to simulate double-strap CFRP-to-steel joints made with a brittle adhesive as well as to reproduce the debonding process of single- or double-lap CFRP-to-steel joints, and the results obtained were compared with those found in the literature. Due to its wide application and good accuracy, the PAM proved to be a reliable tool for predicting the debonding process of a wide range of cases where double-strap, single-lap, or double-lap FRP-to-substrate bonded joints are considered, regardless of the test setup or the adhesive type.
