O planorbídeo Biomphalaria pfeifferi de Moçambique (África Oriental Portuguesa) é indistinguível morfològicamente de Taphius ( =Australor:bis) centimetralis do Brasil.
As duas formas são capazes de cruzar livremente, produzindo híbridos viáveis e férteis, cujos
descendentes podem ser mantidos através de gerações sucessivas no laboratório. Estes factos
indicam a identidade das duas formas. Se esta conclusão for confirmada pelo estudo do material
topotípico, o nome espe-cífico centimetralis Lutz, 1918 tomar-se-á sinónimo de pfeifferi Krauss,
1848, o nome genérico Biomphalaria Preston, 1910 tornar-se-á sinónimo de Taphius Adams e Adams, 1858, e a denominação correcta da espécie será Taphius pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848).
The planorbid snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Mozambique ( Portuguese East Africa) is morphologically indistinguishable from Taphius ( = Austr:alorbis) centimetralis from Brazil. Tbe two forms are able to cross freely, producing viable and fertile hybrids, the offspring of which may be maintained in the laboratory. Those facts indicate the identity of both forros. lt this conclusion is confirmed by the study of topotypic material, the specific name centimetr:alis Lutz, 1918 will become a synonym of pfeiffer:i Krauss, 1848, the generic name Biomphalaria Preston, 1910 will become a synonym of Taphills Adams and Adams, 1858, and the correct denomination of the species will be Taphius pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848).
