SUMMARY The authors present their observations on an epidemic outbreak of poliomyelitis in Lourenço Marques in 1955 with the following conclusions: a) In 1955 there was an epidemic outbreak of poliomyelitis in Lourenço Marques with a total of 72 paralitic cases. b) The incidence was mainly in infants up to 4 years, with a percentage of 95.83. The percentage was 77.77 in the group 0-2 years. c) The outbreak started insidiously in the warmer months but most of the cases occurred during the cooler months of the year (May-June-July). d) The main victims were native children (76.39 percent of the cases). e) It was benign, no deaths being reported. e) The authors estimate that at least 15 000 cases of poliovirosis occurred, which indicates that most of the infant-juvenile population of Lourenço Marques was infected. f) Therefore, and because it seems that the outbreak was due to the Type I virus (Brunhilde) found in several cases in which it was possible to isolate and classify the g) aetioloyical agent, that it might have created an immunity of about 3-4 years, time which is estimated as sufficient to form a significant group of receptives.
