Progress can only be achieved if we all make progress ‘la Caixa’ Foundation, one of the world’s largest philanthropic institutions, allocates to the social sector, namely to Science, Education and Culture, amongst many others, over 50% of its budget. Since 2017, when it started designing its intervention plan in Portugal, following the integration of BPI Bank into Caixa Bank, the Foundation has maintained this resource distribution pattern. Among many other initial issues, it was crucial to gain an in-depth understanding of the country’s social scenario, policies, key actors, and the network of institutions that make up the social solidarity system and the so-called third sector.
