Resumo(s)

In the late nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century, Portugal witnessed modest industrial growth. This industrialisation process was recorded in thousands of photographs, many published in the illustrated press. Here I analyse how Portuguese industry was represented through photography and how that representation was disseminated nationwide with the publication of photographs in the two most important illustrated magazines of the period: O Occidente and Illustração Portugueza. The methodology combines semiotics with discourse analysis in journalism. I show that both magazines built an industrial landscape of modernity and progress, which did not align with the reality of Portuguese industry. Adding to the discussion, I advocate for photography as an historical source, arguing that it is much more than a mere illustrative tool, but a reliable primary source, with great potential for recording history in general, and especially in the fields of business and industrial history, in the sense that photography can provide fresh narratives around technological change.
