The work carried out during the year, which exceeded that of the previous year, came close to what is necessary to reduce the importance of the endemic disease. The Research Section continued its studies on sleeping sickness and other diseases. The Patient Census and Treatment Section observed, for the first time, practically the entire population subject to infection by the disease over the course of a year. A total of 493,300 indigenous people were observed, 1,793 cases of sleeping sickness were diagnosed, 37,509 injections were given,60,359 different treatments administered, 31,978 laboratory tests carried out, 3,299 patients with sleeping sickness and 5,484 with various diseases treated, 2,954 former patients monitored and, in Cubisseco, the population was once again protected with prophylactic injections of Pentamidine. The Glossina Control Section, due to the limited staff available to the 2nd Section, dealt almost exclusively with the registration and treatment of patients. During the year, improvements were made that brought great advantages to the Service: a decree was published exempting all sleeping sickness patients from paying tax during the period of treatment (until now, only those in the nervous stage were exempt), the number of microscopists was increased, and the facilities were greatly improved.
