Resumo(s)
Book of income and expenses of the household of chief-gunner Dom Afonso, nephew of the King Manuel I. The chief-gunner was the legitimate son of Dom Diogo, 4th Duke of Viseu († 1484), the king’s brother. In August 1500, he married Dona Joana de Noronha, sister of Dom Fernando de Meneses, 2nd Marquis of Vila Real. Following this union, he founded his household, which explains the book’s existence. Originally, the book would have included at least 170 numbered folios, of which only 76 remain. Although a large part of its original text is missing, we know some of its content, based on the titles cited below in a factitious index: money pertaining to pensions and settlements paid by the Crown; silver and trousseau handed over by the Marquis Dom Fernando, as payment for his sister’s dowry; pieces made of silver, gold and jewels, made by jewellers; several garment pieces, simple or adorned, made of various fabrics, colours and shapes, made by tailors; pieces of other various materials; payment of pensions to the residents of the aforesaid chief-gunner’s household… Although incomplete, this book exemplifies the need and obligation of the most important members of the Portuguese court’s nobility of the 1500s to display a culture of ostentation revealed in the acquisition and display of material assets and possessions, in order to set apart, justify and magnify their social status. The chief-gunner Dom Afonso did not survive long after his marriage and died in 1506. He left only one daughter as his heir, Dona Beatriz de Lara (b. 1502), who later married her first cousin, Dom Pedro de Meneses, 2nd Count of Alcoutim, and later 3rd Marquis of Vila Real.
