| dc.description.abstract | A vida do Instituto, desde os primeiros passos, então incertos, até aos nossos dias, é bem a expressão do que vale o esforço e saber postos no desempenho duma missão cujos frutos estão bem patentes - a medicina ao serviço da colonização e da civilização - «à sua acção se deve sem dúvida uma quota-parte importante na obra civilizadora do País, quer protegendo o europeu que nos Trópicos deseja fixar-se, quer levando às populações nativas os notáveis benefícios dos recursos terapêuticos de que dispomos, o que certamente constitui para elas uma das provas mais evidentes da nossa superioridade» (Fraga de Azevedo). Nunca faltou à classe médica entusiasmo e patriotismo para colaborar numa empresa de interesse nacional que tem a dignificá-la o estudo criterioso, o sentimento da mais pura abnegação e, através dum trabalho esgotante, honrar a sua missão com aprumo e amor, características que não admitem lições de estranhos e que bem se integram no nosso modo de ser. Houve uma preocupação premente logo no início do ensino da Medicina Tropical - tornar conhecidas as actividades científicas do corpo docente e de todos os que no Ultramar têm à sua conta oportunidade de enfrentar problemas de medicina e de higiene. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | The history of the Institute, from its tentative early beginnings to the present day, is a true testament to the value of the effort and knowledge invested in fulfilling a mission whose fruits are plain to see – medicine in the service of colonisation and civilisation - ‘Its work has undoubtedly played a significant part in the civilising of the country, both by protecting Europeans wishing to settle in the Tropics and by bringing to the native populations the remarkable benefits of the therapeutic resources at our disposal, which certainly constitutes for them one of the most evident proofs of our superiority’ (Fraga de Azevedo). The medical profession has never lacked the enthusiasm and patriotism to collaborate in an undertaking of national interest, which has been dignified by careful study, a spirit of the purest self-sacrifice and, through exhausting work, the honouring of its mission with dignity and love—qualities that admit of no lessons from outsiders and which are well integrated into our way of being. There was a pressing concern right from the start of the teaching of Tropical Medicine – to publicise the scientific activities of the teaching staff and of all those overseas who have the opportunity to tackle problems of medicine and hygiene. | eng |
