Between Tradition and Modernity
Publication . Seixas, Miguel Metelo; Gentile, Pierangelo; Corrêa da Silva, Isabel; Sánchez , Raquel; Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM)
This volume emerges from an international seminar held at the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Turin on 2-4 October 2019, which brought together scholars from various academic and cultural institutions including, aside from the host department, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon, the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, the Complutense University of Madrid, and the Centre for Studies on the Royal Savoy Residences in Reggia di Venaria Reale, Piedmont. It combines the outcomes of this meeting with other contributions of scientific relevance to the subject. The editors’ aim has been to participate in the contemporary historical debate on monarchy, a topic of research that has accelerated markedly in recent years, as attested by the increase in academic colloquiums dedicated to it, such as the conference held in Cambridge in January 2019 under the title Monarchy and Modernity Since 1500, or the annual Kings and Queens Conferences that have been promoted by the Royal Studies Network since 2012.
Shared Heraldry and the Sacred Space
Publication . de Seixas, Miguel Metelo; Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM); Universidad Complutense de Madrid
This study considers the practice of shared heraldry as an instrument of affirmation of late-medieval monarchies, examining the case study of King João I of Portugal. The study of how this sovereign's heraldry was shared with those close to him illustrates how heraldry was understood as an instrument of propaganda for the cause of independence, in the context of the 1383-1385 dynastic crisis, and subsequently in building the imagery of the King and the dynasty he founded. The transposition of this heraldry to the Monastery of Batalha, erected to commemorate the victory at Aljubarrota and later a dynastic necropolis, established a privileged relationship with this monument's architecture and iconography, expanding the same theme of shared heraldry (now in a dynastic context) as an expression of the royal power's legitimacy.

Heraldry in Contact
Publication . Krass , Urte; Seixas, Miguel Metelo; Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM)
In this volume, we follow the coat of arms into situations and zones of contact. Since inception, communication has been in the very nature of the heraldic phenomenon. Hence its remarkable ability to adapt to the circumstances that, from the 15th century onwards, brought populations from all over the world into contact. Our overarching question serves as an attempt to learn more about the modalities of negotiation in contact zones. To what extent were local actors able to develop their own attitude towards invasive and invading colonizers and missionaries by adopting and transforming the European image form of the coat of arms? This departure point leads even further: to think of heraldic emblems as a visual instrument capable of establishing communication not only between different cultures, but also between different eras, and even between the human and divine spheres. The book’s interdisciplinarity, the temporal breadth of the collected case studies, and the variety of methodological approaches reflect the dynamism and diversity of the topic itself.
