This study discusses Portuguese and Brazilian history magazines in circulation for the last 20 years. Understanding the History magazines as a potencial educational media products, what elements distinguish them from a dialogical perspective with the concepts and meanings of textbooks? In this article we seek to understand the history magazines in Portugal, identifying their pedagogical purpose, besides of their sense of disseminating historical knowledge and their commercial interests. We aim to raise questions from a panoramic view of the Portuguese editorial projects in circulation nowadays. To do so, we'll use the Brazilian cases as reference, both because of the theoretical contributions already consolidated around this topic, and the potential cultural dialogs in Portuguese language in the publishing and historiographical production fields. What relationship or distinction can be drawn between these printed materials and school textbooks? This is thus an attempt to analyse the existence of strategies to meet the needs of history teaching, official curricula and the readership ideally formed by education professionals.

O futuro de São Paulo na década de 1950

Na década de 1950, São Paulo tornou-se a maior e mais importante cidade do Brasil. O seu futuro, até então, era hegemonicamente representado como o de uma metrópole gigantesca, moderna e pujante, desembaraçada de quaisquer dificuldades graças a intervenções urbanísticas de precisão cirúrgica. Nesta perspetiva, São Paulo estava destinada à glória. No entanto, esse futuro começou rapidamente a transformar-se, quando projeções concorrentes, que imaginavam o caos e a paralisia como desdobramentos inevitáveis do gigantismo metropolitano, passaram a ganhar força. São Paulo, na verdade, estaria condenada à tragédia, caso nada fosse feito para interromper imediatamente o seu crescimento. O choque entre esses futuros produziu uma cidade esgarçada, cujo destino paradoxal era constituir-se em paraíso e inferno simultaneamente. Este livro conta a história desse esgarçamento, analisando como e por que essas (e outras) representações ganhavam ou perdiam força na sociedade paulistana de meados do século XX. Com esse objetivo, ele segue as trajetórias de políticos, intelectuais e articuladores culturais, além de examinar a imprensa local, em função dos papéis que estes agentes desempenharam na produção dos futuros em disputa.
The Marchioness of Chaves beyond rebellion

This article analyses the figure of the Marchioness of Chaves, Francisca Xavier da Silva Teles (1795-1845). She featured in both the Portuguese and the nternational press and was referred to by various authors during her lifetime. A dark legend has since been built up around her due to her leading role, considered exceptional, in the absolutist military uprisings against the 1826 Constitutional Charter in the north of Portugal. However, her biographical journey reaches far beyond those actions. We correspondingly analyse her attempts to assert herself politically, economically, socially, and symbolically, in the service of the different households to which she belonged: her father's, her first husband's and, finally, her maternal grandfather's, which she inherited. Adopting a gender history perspective, we reflect on the maintenance of traditional strategies for preserving and adding to these aristocratic houses at such an exceptional time as the transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy in Portugal, thus contributing to the still incipient knowledge on this social group in this period.
