Leadership overlap and party-group linkages

Most studies on the interaction between political parties and interest groups rely on organizational or ideological/programmatic linkages. However, leadership overlap can also be a relevant dimension not only because of the increasing importance of informal relations between the two types of political actors but also given the mutual benefits these ties have in terms of decision-making processes. Drawing on an original dataset of party and interest group elite networks, this study examines party-group connections by relying on the profile of leadership in Portugal and investigates whether the crisis has affected the links between these actors. The findings indicate that leadership overlap is rather weak and that it mostly concerns trade unions and left-wing parties. Finally, these linkages demonstrate substantial stability over time, suggesting the importance of ideological proximity.

The Euro-Atlantic security order and the war in Ukraine
Publication . Daehnhardt, Patrícia; Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais (IPRI); Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sealed the collapse of the European security order created after 1991, the end of peace and the return of war in Europe. In its place a confrontational international disorder is emerging characterized by the weakening of the rules based international order, and by the ideological crystallization between democracies and autocracies. The article assesses how both the US and the EU have responded to the war in Ukraine, all while forging a new transatlantic security architecture. While this war has already shattered the European post-cold war order, it may become the prelude to the first war of the ongoing power transition between the United States and China.
