Cultural placemaking in the black suburbs of the tourist city

This article examines how non-institutional(ized) street art tours and DIY parties in two racialized, lower-class neighborhoods in the outskirts of Lisbon generate different results. In the neighborhood of Quinta do Mocho, these street art tours and DIY parties arise as playfulness and multicultural experiences of opening up the communities to local white middle-class visitors and tourists. In the neighborhood of Cova da Moura, these actions culminate in a cultural festival that celebrates African and Afro-diasporic cultures, promoting the visibility of the talented artists of the neighborhood. In both cases, positive representations about these territories are produced, linked to a strengthening of the sense of belonging to Quinta do Mocho’s and Cova de Moura’s communities. The article concludes by suggesting that non-institutional(ized) street art tours and DIY parties arise as pioneering actions toward challenging and decolonizing urban thinking on contemporary Lisbon.

This article attempts to present a comprehensive, synthetic and critical epistemological review of the interdisciplinary field of Nightlife Studies from the late 19th century to the present, unveiling a fascinating interplay between an “alternative cultural approach”, a “community approach” and a “geographical turn” that arose in the mid-to late 2000s. In turn, the article sheds light on the strong commitment that many nightologists showed to the future of nightlife during the pandemic, emphasizing how fundamental nightlife is for community-building, multicultural understanding and socio-emotional well-being at individual and collective levels. In its final part, and more than presenting a new research agenda, the article argues for the need to adopt a “militant/activist socio-environmental approach” that allows shedding light on the old and new challenges and opportunities that exist on the road to promoting a greener, more resilient, inclusive and egalitarian nightlife.

Este artículo examina los impactos espaciales, sociales, simbólicos y patrimoniales derivados de la expansión de la vida nocturna orientada al turismo en Cais do Sodré, el antiguo barrio rojo de Lisboa (Portugal). Tras una breve contextualización geohistórica, el artículo presenta una etnografía crítica realizada entre enero de 2020 y junio de 2024. A la presentación de las cartografías cambiantes de la vida nocturna en Cais do Sodré durante este período le seguirá una discusión etnográfica sobre la sustitución de los locales de ocio nocturno tradicionales por nuevas fórmulas centradas en atraer a los city-breakers. Asimismo, los resultados apuntan a una imparable disneyficación del espacio, transformando y amenazando el patrimonio cultural tangible e intangible existente de la noche de Cais do Sodré. La sección final del artículo subrayará la necesidad urgente de desarrollar nuevas acciones, iniciativas y estrategias para catalogar y proteger el llamado «patrimonio nocturno» de la zona. El artículo concluirá proponiendo la extensión de esta nueva visión sobre la importancia de la protección del patrimonio nocturno a otras ciudades del contexto ibérico y europeo. || This article examines the spatial, social, sym-bolic and heritage impacts derived from the expansion of tourism-oriented nightlife in Cais do Sodré, the for-mer red-light district of Lisbon (Portugal). After a brief geohistorical contextualization, the article presents a critical ethnography carried out between January 2020 and June 2024. The presentation of the changing carto-graphies of nightlife in Cais do Sodré during this period will be followed by an ethnographic discussion of the replacement of traditional nightlife venues by new for-mulas focused on attracting city-breakers. Furthermore, the results point to an unstoppable Disneyfication of the space, transforming and threatening the existing tangi-ble and intangible cultural heritage of the Cais do Sodré nightlife. The final section of the article will underline the urgent need to develop new actions, initiatives and strategies to catalogue and protect the so-called «night heritage» of the area. The article will conclude by propo-sing the extension of this new vision on the importance of protecting what we might term «the nocturnal herita-ge» not only from Lisbon but many other cities from the Iberian and European context.

Lazer noturno e resistências juvenis em tempos de (pós-)pandemia

Em Lisboa, desde o primeiro verão pandêmico, observamos o surgimento de novos atores informais na noite turística do antigo bairro portuário do Cais do Sodré que desenvolviam práticas alternativas de lazer com algumas particularidades: são jovens de nível socioeconômico precário, apresentam traços culturais alternativos e concentram-se para socializar e consumir álcool no espaço público em frente ao bar Antù. Esses jovens são vistos pelas autoridades públicas e por seu braço repressivo policial como atores “indesejáveis” à “normalidade” da noite turística do Cais do Sodré. A sua “alteridade” (ligada a cor de pele, estética corporal e classe social) constitui-se como um elemento perturbador na noite turística da Pink Street. Essa área de diversão noturna tem uma natureza marcadamente hedonista e orientada quase exclusivamente para indivíduos brancos (lisboetas ou não) de classe média alta. Este artigo, resultante de um enfoque etnográfico, visa a analisar a dialética desigual entre a repressão policial (por vezes, violenta) e a resistência performativa dos atores “indesejáveis” da noite turística do Cais do Sodré. O artigo argumenta que os espaços em causa – o bar Antù e o espaço público situado ao redor do estabelecimento – não só emergem como palcos de uma forma de resistência performativa e recusa dos valores societais capitalistas, mas também como um local que proporciona alternativas de (de)construção comunitária e coesão social dentro de um contexto pós-pandêmico profundamente criminalizado, racializado e punitivo.
