Soldados y mujeres indígenas en la Amazonía portuguesa

La corona portuguesa aplicó una serie de políticas a mediados del siglo XVIII para facilitar la integración de los indígenas amazónicos en la sociedad colonial. Entre esas medidas se encontraba el incentivo de los matrimonios entre “blancos” e indígenas. A pesar de ciertas reticencias iniciales, muchos soldados destacados en las regiones de frontera optaron por estos matrimonios. Sin embargo, continuó existiendo un amplio abanico de relaciones informales interétnicas entre hombres y mujeres. En este artículo exploramos varios casos ocurridos en el Rio Negro con la finalidad de analizar las agencias y resistencias de soldados y mujeres indígenas, así como la pluralidad de formas que adoptaron sus interacciones. La reconstrucción de sus itinerarios personales, conectados alrededor de la fortaleza del Rio Negro en la década de 1760, es posible gracias al análisis de fuentes inéditas producidas en aquella misma región y disponibles en el Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará (APEP). From the mid-18th century, the Portuguese crown issued a set of policies that were designed to ease the integration of Amazonian indigenous populations into colonial society. Among these policies, marriage between “white” and indigenous people was to be promoted. Despite early reluctances, many of the soldiers at the frontier opted to marry native women. However, a complicated set of informal interethnic relationships between men and women continued to exist in the region. In this article we reconstruct a number of cases reported in the Rio Negro area, with the aim of analyzing the agency and resistance of both soldiers and native women, as well as the diversity of their social interactions. The reenactment of their personal trajectories, unfolding around the fortress of Rio Negro in the decade of 1760, is made possible through the analysis of unpublished sources produced in the region and are currently archived in the Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará (APEP).

Durante a maior parte do século XVII, a comunicação entre o Estado do Maranhão e o Estado do Brasil foi limitada pela inexistência de um caminho estável por via terrestre. Nas últimas duas décadas desse século, os governadores do Maranhão trataram de melhorar essa comunicação com a exploração das regiões interiores e a abertura de um caminho baseado no conhecimento dos povos indígenas que ali moravam. Com esse fim, organizaram-se expedições de reconhecimento e ativaram-se diferentes estratégias para o controle do território, tais como o descimento dos indígenas e o uso da guerra justa. Este artigo estuda esses projetos a partir da documentação colonial. Leva em conta a influência dos índios na transformação das fronteiras coloniais e as motivações que os administradores tiveram para esse empreendimento, até a virada do século XVIII. Communication between the State of Maranhão and the State of Brazil was limited for most of the seventeenth century by the inexistence of a road by land. In the last two decades of this century, the governors of Maranhão tried to improve this communication by exploring the interior regions and by opening a path based on the knowledge of the indigenous peoples that lived there. For such purpose, expeditions were organized and different strategies for territorial control were activated, such as the descent of indigenous peoples and war. Based on colonial documentation, this article studies these projects, addressing questions about the influence of Indians on the transformation of colonial boundaries and the motivations that authorities had for this endeavor, up to the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Este artículo analiza la circulación de noticias sobre la guerra entre España y Portugal en las fronteras amazónicas, enfatizando la intervención de los actores locales y su conexión con los acontecimientos globales. Se analizan para ello fuentes primarias de varios archivos iberoamericanos, estudiando el envío de órdenes reales desde las capitales imperiales; los circuitos comunicativos al interior de las provincias americanas; la circulación de gacetas y correspondencia privada, así como las prácticas comunicativas en las posiciones de vanguardia. This article analyzes the circulation of news concerning the war between Spain and Portugal in the Amazon frontiers, emphasizing the agency of local actors and their proximity to global events. This article relies upon the analysis of primary sources from several Iberoamerican archives. The text follows the transmission of royal orders from the imperial capitals; communication circuits at the interior of the American provinces; the circulation of gazettes and private correspondences, and the communicative practices at the furthest outposts.
