Tibetan TARA Practices in the Occident

DharmaSun, the online platform for Tibetan Buddhist Teachings created by the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche emerged from the wish to make the Buddha’s teachings available to everyone, especially Westerners. The Triple Excellence wisdom teaching, conveyed from Green Tara to recognized masters, consists of daily instructions for visualisation, mantra singing and meditation over a three year period. This paper focuses on the elaborate visual practices and the musical aspects of mantra singing with the aim of establishing a m bridge between oriental and occidental philosophy. Since ancient times one can distinguish two opposite forms of logos: a musical logos of Heraclitean-Pythagoric origin and a semantic logos of Parmenidean-Aristotelic origin. In Western thought the semantic logos prevailed. The paper will focus on the claims for a reestablishment of the defeated musical logos by two contemporary philosophers: the Spanish María Zambrano, and the Portuguese Fidelino de Figueiredo. According to Figueiredo words oppose a logical game to an emotional spillover, but music has the means to transform pain in transcendent beauty, without denying the pain or dehumanising our condition. Going beyond the traditional ways of Western philosophy Zambrano proposes a musical form of reasoning she beautifully called poetical reason.

The film RHYTHM IS IT! (2004) by Thomas Grube and Enrique Sánchez that records the educational project of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle follows the process in which 250 youngsters, previously strangers to classical music, danced to Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. Observing the Berlin Philharmonic during a rehearsal of Le Sacre in 2003 (documented in Rhythm is it), French dancer and choreographer Xavier Le Roy decided to work on Stravinsky's classic from an interest in the movements of conducting. Having no musical training, Le Roy ventured into a laborious process of studying a conductor's interpretation as if it were choreography of its own. As he states: “an inversion of cause and function unfolds: the gestures and the movements that are meant to prompt musicians to play appear at the same time to be produced by the music they are supposed to produce”. Le Roy’s Le Sacre du Printemps (2007) (performed in 2009 in Teatro Maria Matos in Lisbon) provokes questions about the relationship of movement, image and sound. In this paper I will investigate ventriloquial dimensions of those relations, and my focus will be in discussing if, how and why those relations problematize the status and function of “classical music” in relation to contemporary dance.

Audio modding for immersion in TES

Circunscrevendo-me à plataforma Nexus, um site de partilha e descarregamento de mods para uma selecção de videojogos específicos, pretende-se observar neste trabalho a produção de mods inseridos na categoria de som, áudio e música e a sua aplicação nos dois jogos com mais ficheiros na base de dados – The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion e The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – e como é que os modders utilizam o conceito de imersão não só para o desenvolvimento do mesmo como também para a sua apresentação e divulgação no site. Tendo seleccionado os mods mais descarregados e/ou com melhor avaliação por parte dos jogadores destes dois jogos nesta categoria, procuro entender como é que estes são apresentados e construídos pelos utilizadores na plataforma, recorrendo aos termos “imersão” e/ou “imersivo” quase como uma estratégia de marketing digital, promovendo a ideia de uma aproximação ao “mundo real” ou a um imaginário fantástico estereotipado como “viking” ou “celta”.
