Cell-based switch-on sensors for detection and quantification of label-free viruses

Viruses are major pathogenic agents, claiming millions of human lives every year. While immunization and antiviral drugs were able to reduce global mortality rates, effective prevention and treatment are still to be developed for several infectious diseases. In parallel, advancements on cell culture and molecular biology techniques created a new paradigm. Virus-based biopharmaceuticals are now commonly used in multiple applications, from vaccination to gene and oncolytic therapies. One major bottleneck in research in basic and applied virology is the lack of fast, reliable, and biologically relevant methodologies to detect and quantify viruses. Most of the current methods provide indirect measurements of infectious particles, over-estimating virus infectivity.(...)
